COMPARISON!

Both the disasters were , well ... disastrous . Each effected their own countries in some of the worst ways possible . But what really happened? What is that one thing , that could have made it so much more better , that could have made the crisis so much more easier to handle ?

The earthquake in Haiti was not as disastrous as the tsunami and earthquake in Japan .

However , Japan is more economically developed than Haiti . Haiti wasn't prepared for such a disaster , and it completely destroyed the country . Japan had infrastructures , the money and the brains to recover .

Japan's recovery was easier done than the recovery in Haiti .

Japan's earthquake and tsunami , seen on a scale , was much more disastrous than the quake in Haiti . The simple matter of money , made all the difference .

But what about its effect on the world?

The quake in Haiti may have destroyed the country in itself , but it didn't effect the economy of the world. Foreign aid acted out mostly because of empathy , not actual need for the nation to get back on its feet .

The earthquake and tsunami in Japan , however , did have its effect . The nuclear power plant leaked into the ocean because of the tsunami , and a part of the world depends on japan for their economy .

So I would say , the bigger MEDC it is , the more trouble it may provide .

So lets end this segment with :

"With great power , comes great responsibility"

MY RESEARCH ^_^

RESTORING JAPAN :)

The government of Japan made every effort to restore Japan. When the actual earthquake struck, the government had warning sirens to alert the citizens. Since some sort of quake hits Japan every year, the government was prepared for a disaster like that on a smaller scale, and Japan has things like earthquake proof shelters set up around the country, and many of the buildings are also built to defend against earthquakes. The only foreign aid Japan needed was right after the earthquake , where people were called in to help the Japanese people with fresh supplies, such as food, water, clothes, medication and shelter. When this happened , the aid said , that even though the supplies were scarce , the Japanese were very polite and shared even one piece of food with each other . The government says , that recovery of the country would cost around 16-25 trillion yen. This cost includes fixing roads , buildings , homes and factories . Japan is a very united nation , and the path to recovery , is already being trodden on .

THE DESTRUCTION

HOW BAD WAS IT , REALLY ?

The earthquake had happened offshore , which then later resulted in a tsunami . There was a Nuclear Power Plant near the shore , and when the huge wave spilled , the power plant went into meltdown . The molten nuclear fuel leaked through the safety barriers , and went into the sea . A total of 12,431 people died . Over 163,000 were put in evacuation shelters around the country . Fixing everything without foreign help would cost 16-25 trillion yen , which covers repairing damage to roads , homes , factories and other infrastructure .
Many families were destroyed

HAVE A LOOK ... WHAT DO YOU THINK?

IF YOU LOOK CAREFULLY ... YOU MAY NOTICE SOMETHING RATHER ... DISASTROUS IN THESE PICTURES !

MY MEDC COUNTRY IS ... JAPAN !

MY MEDC CASE STUDY

I'm doing Japan for my MEDC case study , so lets get to know a little bit more about the country.

Japan is an Island located in East Asia , its capital is Tokyo , and its Emperor is Akihito. Japan's Economy is the third largest national economy of the world . Japan is an MEDC ( as you might have already figured out ) and its economy , its government , its sanitation and health care are very good . Since its in such a location that it gets alot of quakes and tsunamis , it has mostly earthquake proof buildings and quake and tsunami radars set around the place , so when a disaster occurs , its set to handle it well.

My research ^_^

RESTORING HAITI :)

Haiti seemed to be doomed , but then , help came along the way. Organisations like GHESIKO and Partners in health. They not only provided medicines and other aid , they educated people , and trained the poor people for better jobs.

WHAT WAS THE DESTRUCTION LIKE ?

Unlike many other countries , Haiti had very few earthquake-proof buildings . The buildings were weak , and therefore many collapsed and became a death trap for people . After the earthquake , USA stopped importing Haitian goods , and that increased the amount of poverty . Because of the poverty , people started getting diseases , and many began suffering from AIDS. Some lost their jobs , the main prison was destroyed so many criminals escaped . The transport and communication links were almost completely destroyed . For a long time , no foreign aid could come in since the airport tower , and some of the rest , was also badly damaged .

BEFORE AND AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

THE EARTHQUAKE

See what happened in the week of the earthquake , form your own opinions , and comment below!

The Haiti earthquake was truly a disaster . If the earthquake had occured in an MEDC , the effects may not have been so disastrous . Around 222,570 people were killed , and 300,572 injured.

LEDC HAITI CASE STUDY

First of all , lets get to know more about Haiti .

Haiti is a small island located south east of USA . Its capital is port-au-prince .It is an LEDC country , so it doesn't have very good education , sanitation or health care .

My case studies!

Now that I've covered exactly what an MEDCs and LECD's are , let me tell what this blog is going to be about . I''m going to do 2 case studies  , on an LEDC and one on an MEDC .

1.LEDC : Haiti earthquake 2010
2.MEDC : Japan earthquake 2011

Stay tuned for more !

What is an MEDC ?

MEDC stands for More economically developed country . These countries are places such as United Kingdom and Canada . They have a better government , good water supply , good education , good health care , good sanitation , more electricity and they recover faster than LEDCs .

What is an LEDC ?

LEDC means less economically developed country . Most LEDC's don't have a very good government . They don't have things like clean water , sanitation , good schools , education systems or good health care. They may also have social evils . LEDC's are normally Asian or African countries such as Haiti .
